The Escape
Wendy
the only criticism that come to mind on the first video is that some of the music is a bit distracting/cheesy at parts. but i think it stands out because the rest of the music is really fitting.
on the escape i didn't really see anything other than quality control sort of stuff that you already know about
i thought the story was paced really well
3: 20amKarl
cole and I are re-editing the escape currently so any story comments will help alot
what do you think if it was alot shorter
3: 21amWendy
i think it would be interesting to maybe get a little more of briann's perspective..if she feels in competition with an inanimate object. etc
3: 21amKarl
yessss im glad you said that
3: 21amWendy
i don't know. i guess it depends on what direction you go. i didn't think it was too long. i didn't feel long
3: 22amWendy
it definitely makes you curious. are austin and briann still together?
3: 23amKarl
kinda sorta
not really I guess
3: 23amWendy
how long ago was this filmed?
3: 23amKarl
two years
3: 24amWendy
yeah their relationship seemed pretty volatile.
3: 24amKarl
they were young.
3: 24amWendy
it was really interesting...especially in the scene in the restauurant i could see him being totally overwhelmed by how to communicate with her in a healthy way
3: 25amKarl
it was the camera too I think. they were very uncomfortabel
3: 25amWendy
oh i'm sure
but just body language alone was really interesting
the fact that he criticizes and mocks her on camera
to her face
3: 27amKarl
yeah that is a pretty good microcosm of how they interact too but the fact they both acknowledge the camera makes the audience not believe it
3: 27amWendy
i'm sorry, i'm nerding out. my dad's a social worker. and i love to study communications/body language, so it's just really fascinating to me
no i think you could turn the sound completely off and learn more about their relationship than with it on
3: 28amKarl
interesting
3: 28amWendy
not that it would be more interesting for the film...but i'm just saying ha
3: 29amKarl
i think there is alot of talking. I want to show more riding and try to make some more parallels with visuals
3: 29amWendy
i found it interesting that even though what they were doing at the restaurant seemed fairly antagonistic, they were still mirroring each other's movements, which is a sign of a desire to be closely connected with each other
3: 30amKarl
I will send you the re-edit when it is complete. there is going to be music and sound design in it as well
3: 31amWendy
i feel like you could really take your approach and go two different directions: you could make it longer with more talking or you could make it shorter with more riding/visuals. both could be good. i wouldn't marry myself to one exclusively even
i think for riders shorter is always better ha. but from an artistic perspective i love the dimension you're bringing to it
3: 32amKarl
I want to submit it to the bicycle film festival in newyork
3: 32amWendy
yeah that would be great. i feel like anyone who is both a biker and an artist will love it
3: 34amKarl
I'm making a film when we go to woodward
3: 34amWendy
that's cool. i'm really excited about what you're doing
3: 34amKarl
I want to document the culture more than anything
3: 35amWendy
yeah. it's verrrry interesting. it really stands out to me being someone who is really conscious of that type of thing and also coming into the situation as an adult not being from the culture
you can adapt to it fairly quickly i find
3: 36amKarl
why do you think females are less involved? is it bad marketing?
3: 36amWendy
general lack of encouragement all around i think
it's male dominated, so it takes a certain type of girl to brave stepping into that
3: 37amKarl
the culture is very young too
3: 37amWendy
very yonug
very antisocial personalities are generally attracted to it i find. that's a major common denominator i find
3: 38amKarl
hmm i never noticed. theres another film
3: 39amWendy
oh yeah. you and i could have a total brainstorm and come up with so many
because i have the communicational nerd/outsider perspective ha
3: 40amWendy
i feel like there's a whole documentary in what drives you to do it because it's such a massochistic sport
3: 41amKarl
yeah i could never handle getting hurt... I hold way back
3: 41amWendy
you got the escape part, that's definitely a component. i feel like you could even go more into that in regard to how it drives you to be intensely present in a way you can't typically be otherwise, but it's for completely practical purposes
i compare riding for myself to meditation. that's how it feels. only better and more effortless
3: 43amKarl
it is very individual and you dont have anything to prove but to yourself. that is what I liked. its like you are constantly trying to push your personal limit. that is why i like running too
3: 44amWendy
but it's also extremely social. it takes effort to encapsulate yourself in that way because the way that the group usually encourages each other is by criticizing and belittling
it's not with ill intent of course
in a group of friends anyway
3: 46amKarl
yeah. I hope that changes in the future. I really like the opportunity for individual styles too
3: 48amWendy
definitely. one of the things that i think fascinates me the most is the whole "seperate but together" vibe the happens when groups of riders are together. i realized that i could learn more in 10 minutes about dudes than they new about guys they had been riding with for years. there is a knowing and a bond that seems to come from just doing the same activity in the same space, but not really connecting on a personal level that takes any intimacy
i'm not saying this is true for all groups of riders, but it is a reoccuring theme i've noticed as i've gotten to know more and more different groups of people who ride
3: 49amKarl
very true
this is inspiring
3: 51amWendy
anything you want to show me that you're working on i'd be happy to help
if you want to sit down with a legal pad and talk and scribble shit down. i'm there. i think what you're doing is great
3: 52amKarl
awesome! we will have a brainstorm sesh soon. I havent made a bmx film in a long time
3: 52amWendy
it's great for me too because i've been thinking all these things in my head for months ha ha
3: 54amWendy
i have the "new rider enthusiasm" i've been told. so hopefully some of that will re energize you as well
3: 56amKarl
yeah. it would be nice to just get out and ride again. It loved the days when nothing else mattered but riding. it became a chore after a while though. It ws hard to get the crew together and ride so we all just slowed it down.
3: 56amWendy
i ride everyday if possible. riding once a week right now is killing me.

The riding in this video is pretty gnarly. I had a thought a few days ago about how there are two types of BMX riders: Ones who ride more for expression and ones who ride more for progression. This video is of a rider who fits both of those categories.

Another reel with good transitions, but I’m not sure if I saw enough of each project to effectively judge the editing or if the editing was from the original project at all… It felt like everything was re-edited for the reel. That would showcase good montage skills but not show much roundness in editing skill sets.
